The German measurement and calibration law MessEG regularises calibration in §§7 through 57 and includes the obligatory calibration of measuring instruments in official and contractual transport, health service, security service, and transportation, and for environmental protection.

The Office of Weights and Measures is responsible for statutory metrology (transformed into national property in 1912). The main tasks are supervision and calibration of measuring instruments subject to obligatory calibration due to their use. The Offices of Weights and Measures in Germany normally are subordinate to the ministry of economics of the land and are bound to regulations by the PTB (federal institute of physics and metrology).
