The SCHWENK Building Materials Group specialises in cement, special building materials, concrete, sand, gravel, chippings and concrete pumps. Founded in Ulm in 1847, the company now produces high-quality building materials at 166 locations in Germany, Europe and around the world.

Efficient processes are essential to the company's success. That is why the company sets high standards for optimal process design at its production sites.

By introducing logis and the yard management system, we were able to reduce our throughput times by 20% and enable unmanned 24/7 operation. logis gives us full transparency across all processes in the plant.

Challenge

As part of an international rollout project, several cement, sand and gravel plants belonging to the SCHWENK Baustoffgruppe were equipped with our yard management system for the automated handling of transport by truck and rail. One of these is the Bernburg site. The SCHWENK cement plant in Bernburg handles 1.5-2 million tonnes annually. At peak times, this means handling 400-500 trucks per day as well as additional freight wagons.

Solution

From driver registration and automated weighing and loading to invoicing, our yard management system now supports all relevant business processes at the site.

Upon arrival, drivers can register themselves at the terminal around the clock. A number plate recognition system then automatically allows them to enter the site or, alternatively, performs an initial weighing. The user guidance at the self-service terminals is available in 17 different languages.

After automated entry, the driver proceeds to the loading point, where they can load their vehicle themselves, complete the initial and second weighing, and receive their delivery documents. The driver is then authorised to leave immediately and is also checked out via a number plate recognition system, so that invoicing processes can be initiated directly in the higher-level ERP system.

Our logis yard management software enables full transparency across all processes in the plant. Thanks to individual process and interface design, the system integrates seamlessly into existing workflows and IT systems. For the loading of palletised goods, logis Mobile is also integrated into the forklift trucks to handle the loading processes.

Further site rollouts were implemented based on a stable project template. This offers the advantage of being able to build on existing processes with a consistent team.

The collaboration with OAS has always been cooperative and professional. This project involved developing processes tailored to our site and the cement production process. Throughout the entire process, every vehicle was loaded on time, right from day one. That was an outstanding achievement.
