The Swiss Model Group is an innovative manufacturer of packaging solutions with 15 locations across Europe. In addition to other locations in Europe, the group operates a state-of-the-art corrugated base paper production facility in Eilenburg. Germany. With a total production capacity of 625,000 tonnes per year, the paper machine ranks among the top five in Europe.

We are represented at 15 European locations and were tasked by the Model Group with selecting a system that we could roll out at our various locations. By introducing the OAS Yard Management System, we now have clear processes, faster throughput times and are more optimised overall.

Challenge

With up to 180 entries and exits per day, 100% waste paper usage, chemical deliveries and extensive finished goods deliveries, the Eilenburg site requires maximum transparency and stability in its logistics processes. The old system that was replaced consisted of several individual components, was not uniform and offered only limited automation options. To ensure secure and efficient 24/7 handling of inbound and outbound logistics, there was a need to introduce a harmonised, automated yard management system with end-to-end digitalised and process-controlled operations – including driver self-service, automated calls and in-depth IT integration – for the group's various sites.

Solution

To ensure transparent and efficient handling of logistics processes, we implemented a fully integrated yard management system that maps all process steps from registration to departure. The heart of the system is the logis yard management software. It controls all central processes and enables automated, unmanned 24/7 operation. Drivers check in themselves at multilingual OAS Logistic terminals, including document scanning and safety instructions. The system calls drivers to the temporary parking area via information boards and text message notifications. All weighing processes are automated – supported by number plate recognition, position control and paperless document processing.

Using the logis mobile application installed on the forklifts, forklift drivers in the waste paper delivery area can dispatch trucks directly from the warehouse – without unnecessary trips to the car park.
Once loading is complete, the freight and customs documents are also issued directly at the self-service terminal. This enables 24/7 self-service operations to be implemented to ensure smooth logistics processes.

Status messages are processed in real time via interfaces to SAP and other IT systems, and all goods and material flows are documented and invoiced. OAS's comprehensive service and standby agreement additionally ensures 24/7 operational readiness for highly critical production logistics.

Thanks to the strong IT integration of the yard management system into our SAP core system and our time window system, we can now plan our resources more effectively.
