Yard Management System for LEAG

Efficient loading and transport handling in the mining and energy industry

LEAG is undergoing a comprehensive transformation process: from a traditional lignite business to a modern, sustainable power plant and refining site. A key component of this process is the digitalisation of logistics. A powerful yard management system (YMS) including yard automation has therefore been introduced at the Schwarze Pumpe site with the aim of increasing transparency, efficiency and sustainability in equal measure.

The yard management system has brought us transparency and performance, reduced throughput times and made us fit for the future. We want to expand our process landscape even further and are confident that this system will enable us to do so.

Challenge

The Schwarze Pumpe site is logistically highly complex. A wide variety of goods flows – from lignite, briquettes and dust products to wood pellets and palletised goods – encounter a wide range of vehicles and modes of transport. On peak days, up to 300 lorries and 70 to 80 railway wagons are loaded and processed.

Before the project began, the existing system landscape was fragmented: multiple systems operated in parallel, with limited transparency and restricted control options. The aim was to replace this structure with a uniform system, reduce throughput times, automate processes and meet the highest requirements for availability and IT security.

Solution

With the introduction of an integrated yard management and yard automation system, all road and rail logistics processes were bundled in the logis yard management software. A total of 17 rail scales and road vehicle scales, as well as various loading controls, forklift trucks, depot dispatch and external sales including payment processing, were integrated into the system. Integrated self-service registration with automatic safety instructions, mobile ADR checks and load securing documentation via tablet, SMS-based calls, automated weighing and loading processes, and integrated payment processes now ensure consistent, transparent workflows. When loading palletised goods, forklift drivers call up the vehicles directly, thus avoiding unnecessary trips and waiting times.

As LEAG is part of the critical infrastructure (KRITIS), special attention was paid to the reliability of the system: a decentralised operating concept with local databases ensures that operations can continue at all times, even in the event of network failures. Numerous interfaces – including to ERP, time slot management, empty pallet management, merchandise management and wagon provision – ensure seamless integration into the existing IT and OT landscape of the critical infrastructure.

Comprehensive 24/7 OAS on-call support ensures smooth operation around the clock, even in the event of a malfunction.

LEAG is part of critical infrastructure (KRITIS). The IT requirements for the project were therefore extremely detailed. We had to work in several zones in both OT and IT and set up the interfaces, including firewalls. This challenge was always solved to everyone's complete satisfaction.
